Leadership isn't a title, it's an action.

What's at stake if I don't share my story?

As one of 10 selected participants in Class 11 of the American Farm Bureau Federation's Partners in Advocacy Leadership Program, or PAL, I've learned a lot about why sharing the story of agriculture is important. The bottom line is if we don't tell our story, someone else will tell it for us.

PAL is an elite, experiential training program that creates advocacy leaders for agriculture. It is a two-year program through American Farm Bureau with 10 students in each class. As part of PAL Class 11, I have had the incredible opportunity to learn how to become a better advocate and leader. PAL has challenged me through four modules to become a better, stronger, and more knowledgeable advocate. Those modules include:

The PAL program focuses on the core competencies of:

Each of these competencies has challenged me to learn more about myself and how I can better serve agriculture and the organizations that are important to me.

Some of my favorite experiences with PAL are visiting New York City and meeting people who have never had the opportunity to see a farm or visit with a farmer. I also had the opportunity to complete Diamond 6 Leadership's Battle of Gettysburg Leadership Workshop. PAL has provided me with an opportunity to practice sharing my story in a variety of ways including mock media interviews, congressional testimony, speeches, and panel discussions. My favorite part of the program beyond these experiences is getting to know and work closely with my PAL11 classmates. The opportunity to learn from one another during this experience is second to none and is a valuable reminder of the strength of personal relationships.

I am grateful to Arkansas Farm Bureau Federation for nominating me for this incredible program, to American Farm Bureau Federation for challenging me to reach beyond my comfort zones while equipping me to be a skilled agriculture advocate, and to the program sponsors, Farm Credit and Bayer
